Biography 艺术家简介
Guo Cheng is an artist based in Shanghai. Working primarily through installation, he integrates custom software and hardware, mixed media, and spatial interventions to consider technology as a condition that organizes modes of perception and relations between humans and the things and systems around them. His practice moves across infrastructures, technological systems, and environmental processes, examining how they intervene in everyday life across different spatial and temporal scales. In recent years, his work has approached the entanglement between technological and ecological systems from a planetary perspective. Through a restrained yet subtly absurd approach, his works juxtapose ordinary technological artifacts with vast spatiotemporal scales. By placing familiar systems in unexpected material and spatial situations, they question the assumptions through which we understand and organize the world.
His recent solo exhibitions include Current·Current at Taikang Art Museum, Beijing (2026); Bug at Magician Space, Beijing (2025); The Park at Sifang Art Museum, Nanjing (2022); Almost Unmeant at Magician Space, Beijing (2020); and Down to Earth at Canton Gallery, Guangzhou (2019). His works have been presented at M+, Hong Kong; Tai Kwun Contemporary, Hong Kong; Power Station of Art, Shanghai; UCCA Edge, Shanghai; ICA at NYU Shanghai; Haus der Kulturen der Welt (HKW), Berlin; Zhejiang Art Museum, Hangzhou; Chengdu Art Museum; Macao Museum of Art; Centre for Heritage, Arts and Textile (CHAT), Hong Kong; and Deutsches Hygiene-Museum, Dresden, among other institutions. His solo exhibition Bug received the Best Exhibition Award at Gallery Weekend Beijing in 2025.
His distinctions include the New Century Art Foundation Art Production and Exhibition Support Program (2022); Porsche Young Chinese Artist of the Year Award (2021); Honorary Mention, Prix Ars Electronica (2020); CAC://DKU Research & Creation Fellowship (2020); STARTS Prize nomination (2020); Digital Earth Fellowship (2018–2019); Special Jury Prize, Huayu Youth Award (2018); and Bio-Art & Design Award (2017).
Guo Cheng served as Executive Director of Chronus Art Center, Shanghai (2015–2017), and as a visiting researcher in the Department of Environment and Health at Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (2017). He has taught at the College of Design and Innovation, Tongji University, Shanghai, since 2013.
Guo's works are held in the collections of M+ (Hong Kong), Power Station of Art (Shanghai), Sigg Collection (Switzerland), De Ying Foundation and International Art & Science Research Institute (China), among others.
郭城是一位生活和工作于上海的艺术家。他的创作主要以装置为媒介，整合定制软硬件、混合媒介与空间干预，关注技术如何作为一种条件，组织感知方式以及人与周遭事物和系统之间的关系。他的创作跨越基础设施、技术系统与环境过程，考察它们如何在不同时间与空间尺度上介入日常生活。近年来，他从行星尺度出发，审视技术系统与生态系统之间的纠缠关系。他的作品以克制而略带荒诞的方式，将日常技术物件与宏大的时空尺度并置。通过把熟悉的系统置于出人意料的物质与空间情境之中，作品进一步质疑那些支撑我们理解和组织世界的既有假设。
郭城近期个展包括：《洋·洋》，泰康美术馆，北京（2026）；《虫》，魔金石空间，北京（2025）；《公园》，四方当代美术馆，南京（2022）；《近乎无意》，魔金石空间，北京（2020）；《地气》，广州画廊，广州（2019）。其作品曾展出于香港 M+ 美术馆、大馆当代美术馆、上海当代艺术博物馆、UCCA Edge、上纽 ICA、柏林世界文化宫、浙江美术馆、成都美术馆、澳门艺术博物馆、六厂纺织文化艺术馆以及德国卫生博物馆等机构。个展《虫》于2025年获得画廊周北京最佳展览奖。
郭城曾获得新世纪当代艺术基金会“艺术家创作及展览资助计划”（2022）、保时捷“中国青年艺术家双年评选”奖（2021）、奥地利电子艺术奖荣誉奖（2020）、CAC://DKU研究与创作学术奖金（2020）、STARTS奖提名（2020）、数字地球学术奖金（2018–2019）、华宇青年奖评委会特别奖（2018），以及生物艺术奖（2017）。
郭城曾任上海新时线媒体艺术中心执行总监（2015–2017）、荷兰阿姆斯特丹自由大学环境与健康研究部门访问研究员（2017），自2013年起任教于同济大学设计创意学院。
郭城的作品已被香港 M+ 博物馆、上海当代艺术博物馆、瑞士希克收藏、德英基金会以及中国国际艺术与科学研究院等机构收藏。
